Handbook of Alpaca Health
Alpacas are beautiful, intelligent and hardy animals, raised for their wonderfully soft fibre which comes in a dazzling array of natural colours. However like all animals, alpacas do have small health issues. As they are still relatively new on the agricultural scene, health text are few and far between. All too often problems happen when professional help is far distant.
The notes in this book form part of an ongoing collection af these issues, based on current information and anecdotes provided by more experienced breeders. Topics range from eye and ear problems to birth and behavioural issues, and include a useful section on plants known to be poisonous to alpacas.
Elizabeth Paul has been an alpaca breeder for many years. Animal health and wellbeing has occupied a considerable place in her training as a biologist, and she has incorporated much of that knowledge into this seminar on alpaca health problems.
The seminar is intended to provide an introduction for novice owners to identify some of these problems, set against a backgroud explanation of the body systems.
