Chip the animal
Alpaca Association Benelux chose to standardize the location for putting the microchip. The microchip should be at the base of the left ear. The advantages are that the microchip can not migrate, and scanning is easy because there is little wool on this place. Important is that most other alpaca-herd books use this location also. The left ear base is the global standard.

Placing the microchip is as follows.
A helper holds the animal fixed at the head. While one person stands behind the head of the animal, the left ear is held with the left hand. With the other hand you feel a soft dimple under skin at the base of the ear. This dimple is a beautiful subcutaneous place for implantation of a microchip. Locate this dimple good by gently pressing with finger or thumb. The needle of the chip plant with a quiet movement under the skin. Bring in the needle not to deep, but just deep enough for a subcutaneous injection.

Alternatively the skin at the base of the ear can be pulled up between thumb and index finger. However, this is not possible at all the animals. If done correctly, the animal will not suffer from this action. If the ear itself would be hit, there may be a small bit of blood. However, this is never to that extent that it is a risk to the animal. In this case, press a few minutes on the puncture site.

The younger the animal, the less space there is to place the chip, and the bigger the risk on damage the ear. However, if injecting the microchip with caution, there's no reason for this not to do it at an early age.

Inserting a microchip is legally a veterinary act.
